Port Huron children's museum opens, "8,000 square feet of interactive fun"

Oct 16, 2024

PORT HURON, Mich. – The City of Port Huron held a ribbon cutting ceremony to commemorate the opening of a new children’s museum at the site of the Knowlton Museum.

The new Discovery City Children's Museum boasts a wide range of interactive exhibits such as a camping exhibit, water features, an animated sandbox, an indoor playscape and a children-run city.

The new museum is an expansion of the former Discovery City exhibit that used to be located at the Port Huron Museum’s Carnegie Center.

“This is now 8,000 square feet of interactive fun. So anyone who has heard of Discovery City in the past and thinks they know what they are looking at or looking for, has a lot to be surprised by. So much more to be excited by,” said Dawn Schwehofer, the director of the Discovery City Children's Museum.

The project was a joint venture between The City of Port Huron and the Port Huron Parks and Recreation Department, who cited a lack of indoor play spaces for children as the inspiration for the project.
